Sleaford Mods

Sleaford Mods are a Nottingham minimalist duo who rap/rant/cuss in a distinct East Midlands dialect; imagine Alan Sillitoe with tourettes writing a modern day Saturday Night and Sunday Morning with a mobile phone in one hand, an E-Cig in the other whilst ordering a bottle of lager in a crowded pub.

I like them because:

1. Their lead singer Jason Williamson is, by his own admission, gobby: a must for any front man.
2. They're not embarrassed to put a 'z' in Notts.
3. They namecheck Doctor Feelgood and The Sex Pistols
4. They film music videos on the top deck of Nottingham buses.
5. They swear. An awful lot.

Her's a little film Quietus TV made about them and below is the splendid Tied up in Nottz:

  1. 'Tiswas' was the first thing I heard by them, after which I checked out more on YouTube. It's engaging stuff alright. 'Cameron's hairdresser got an MBE, I said to my wife, you'd better shoot me', is one of the best lyrics I've heard this year.

    1. I can hear The Fall in there, I can hear The Streets, I can even hear Uncle Peter from Vic & Bob.

  2. Bloody Hell. After the first 30 minutes or so i was thinking "You've got to be joking", but the end of the song I was converted. I'm off to look for some more. This is not my usual territory (not a big Fall fan, don't like Indie) but it's definitely got something about it. Sounds like the characters from Shane Meadows's Dead Mean's Shoes have made a record. You're right about Uncle Peter too.

  3. Sell outs. I was a fan until they agreed to be interviewed by the NME, an organ they've always derided. They'll be cosying up to their arch nemesis Kasabian next.

    1. Are you sure? They don't sound like they've sold out to me - whatever that means these days. If talking to the New Musical Express means you'e sold your soul to the devil then it can only be a matter of time before we see them in Hello magazine. Anyway, Left Lion got to them first.

  4. Hmm. I thought I'd commented on this back in October but it seems not, I must have just nodded appreciatively instead!

Anyway, I'm returning to it to point out, if you didn't know, that Maxine Peake's Artsnight which has just concluded on BBC2 had the lads on tonight
